Lawn Mower Blades

Tips On Sharpening Your Lawn Mower Blades

Lawn mower blades are made either of mild steel, tool steel or carbon steel. Their edges however are all made of tool steel so that they remain sharp for a long time without having to sharpen them too often. Blades that are entirely made of tool steel will generally cost more, and you usually cannot sharpen them in your own workshop. On the other hand, carbon and mild steel blades are cheaper and easier to maintain. If the lawn mower blades are not kept sharp, grass blades will not be properly cut, but result into an overall ugly look.

You do not have to have an engineering degree or any special technical inclinations to be able to sharpen the lawn mower blade yourself easily and quickly. It can be done by everyone and it is neither a time consuming process. This article will guide you on this procedure, which will work regardless of your lawn mower’s type.

For the blades removal, consult the owners’ manual and proceed accordingly. Make sure you completely disconnect the power sources, and if batteries power the mower, remove all of them. Check multiple times that the power is off to prevent any accidents caused by an unplanned engine start while removing the blades.

The next step for safely removing the blades from the mower will probably need external help, and maybe a couple of spanners. Be careful not to be cut, and ensure the blades so they do not slip. Once you took them out, you might want to number them so that you will know where each of them fits later on.

Now begins the sharpen process. First, fix the blades in a stable position so that you can work easily. Use a file or grinder if needed, and be sure you follow the contour of the blade when sharpening. When you are done, refit the blades onto the mower and make sure the balancing is correct.

Some people use a sharpening method that does not require removing the blades from the push lawn mower. This however is less convenient and more difficult. A flexible shaft angle grinder will help you sharpen the blades perfectly and save you precious time.

Lastly, check again if the blade is properly balanced, and consider using a balancer. A guaranteed method to know if the blades are fitted right is to check whether the mower vibrates. If it does not, you have successfully completed your first lawn mower blades sharpening process.
